| Heavy traffic jam in Nairobi |
Nairobi is expected to experience major traffic disruptions on Friday, September 5, as the city hosts Kenya’s crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier against Gambia at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani from 4PM.
The National Police Service (NPS) in a notice announced that temporary road closures and diversions will take effect from as early as 6 AM along the Thika Superhighway and adjoining routes.
"Due to the ongoing World Cup 2026 Qualifiers, the National Police Service wishes to inform the public of temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi," the notice read in part.
Motorists have been urged to plan ahead and follow alternative routes to avoid congestion.
According to the notice, drivers traveling from Nairobi’s central business district towards Thika, Ruiru, or Juja will be diverted to Kiambu Road at Exit 4, with a roadblock mounted at Muthaiga.

Meanwhile, motorists from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru driving into the city center are expected to use either the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, where a second roadblock will be set up at the Ruiru interchange.

NPS said additional officers have been deployed to manage the situation and warned that strict action will be taken against anyone disregarding traffic regulations.
The service further appealed to drivers to cooperate with officers on the ground to ensure smooth movement around Nairobi and its suburbs.
The traffic advisory comes just a day after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) issued a scam alert to fans.
The federation revealed that a fraudulent website, complete with a fake M-PESA paybill number, had been set up to dupe unsuspecting supporters into buying counterfeit tickets for Kenya’s fixtures against Gambia and Seychelles.
FKF clarified that the only legitimate ticketing partner is Tikiti, accessible via www.tikiti.co.ke or by dialing *519*55#.
