A night of fun turned into tragedy in Eldoret on Monday, September 1 when a teenage wrestling contest between friends ended in the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old student.

Reports indicate that the victim, identified as Deng Junior, was a Form Four student who had not returned to school due to financial struggles.

Police say Deng was stabbed in the chest by a fellow youth after pinning him down during a casual wrestling match in Kapsoya estate, a neighbourhood home to many Sudanese refugees.

According to Ainabkoi Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Kimunya, the suspect, enraged after losing the contest, stormed into his house, grabbed a knife, and returned to attack Deng.

Friends rushed the bleeding teen to St. Mary’s Hospital before he was referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The assailant fled the scene immediately, sparking a police manhunt. Detectives later raided his home but found it deserted.

Authorities describe him as a “hustler in the area” and have vowed to bring him to justice.

“Our officers are following up to ensure the suspect is arrested and brought to book over the murder,” Kimunya said.

Both Deng and the suspect are said to be part of the refugee community in Kapsoya.

Deng’s body has been moved to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
