Morocco became the first country to win the African Nations Championship (CHAN) three times after a 3-2 win against Madagascar in the 2024 final at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi on Saturday, August 30.

The match began with a shock for the Atlas Lions when Madagascar took the lead in the 9th minute.

A quick passing move ended with Félicité Manohantsoa curling the ball into the top corner, giving the island nation an early advantage.

Morocco responded strongly and equalized in the 27th minute through Youssef Mehri, who rose highest to head in a corner from Khalid Baba.

Morocco went ahead just before halftime when Oussama Lamlioui tapped in at the near post in the 44th minute, a goal confirmed after a brief VAR check.

Holding a 2-1 lead at the break, Morocco dominated possession in the second half but were caught out in the 68th minute.

Toky Rakotondraibe exploited a gap in the defense, raced through, and slotted past goalkeeper El Mehdi Al Harrar to make it 2-2.

The decisive moment came in the 80th minute. Lamlioui spotted the Malagasy goalkeeper off his line and struck from near the halfway mark, sending the ball over him and into the net.

The goal secured Morocco’s third CHAN title after previous triumphs in 2018 and 2020.

Morocco will earn $3.5 million for winning the championship, while Madagascar, finishing runners-up after placing third in 2022, will receive $1.2 million.

The Atlas Lions are coached by Tarik Sektioui and have now won all three of their titles in the past six years, underlining their dominance in the competition.
