CHAN 2024 Final: All Eyes on Kasarani as Morocco and Madagascar Clash

The CHAN 2024 trophy

Nairobi is bracing for a historic football showdown on Saturday, August 30, when Morocco and Madagascar lock horns in the grand finale of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, from 6pm.

The Atlas Lions of Morocco, already two-time winners, are chasing a record third crown, while Madagascar head into their first-ever final, looking to turn their fairytale run into a maiden title.

Madagascar, bronze medallists in 2023, will be appearing in their first-ever final after defeating Sudan 1-0 in extra time in the semi-finals.

Morocco, champions in 2018 and 2020, advanced by beating defending champions Senegal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw and could become the first nation to lift the trophy three times.

In their only previous CHAN meeting, Madagascar beat Morocco 3-0 in a 2022 group match in Algeria.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya in a statement on Friday, assured fans of a safe, seamless, and festive experience, noting that elaborate measures are in place for a smooth event.

Dignitaries such as FIFA executives, CAF officials, and the President of Madagascar, alongside senior government representatives from Uganda and Tanzania are expected to grace the event.

Pre-match celebrations will run from 2pm to 5pm with performances from Ugandan artist Eddy Kenzo, Tanzanian singer Zuchu, and Kenyan musician Savara.

Fan zones in Lucky Summer, Archives, Kibera, Githurai, and Jacaranda Grounds will broadcast the final.

Morocco coach Tarek Sektoiu expressed confidence in his team’s preparation.

“We are very confident about the outcome of this match. To win the final you must be 100 percent ready at every level. Respecting your opponent means respecting yourself, but we have the means to succeed and win the final,” he said.

At the same time, Madagascar coach Romuald Rakotondrabe said his team had earned their place and would compete strongly.

“Morocco are the favourites; they are a big football country. But we are not here by luck. We worked hard for our place, and if we win it will be like a dream come true for the people of Madagascar,” he said.

With Kasarani set for a full house and Nairobi painted in football fever, the CHAN 2024 final doubles as a dress rehearsal for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
