Former Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter has vowed to continue speaking truth to power despite being abducted in broad daylight on Sunday, June 30, 2024.
Addressing the media outside Kamukunji Police Station, Keter stated he would not be silenced by the dramatic arrest ordeal.
Keter emphasized his commitment to criticizing the government over punitive tax measures and policies detrimental to citizens.
“You cannot force us to accept punitive measures when Kenyans are living in abject poverty. You cannot intimidate us into silence. I want to say that I am coming out strong,” Keter declared.
He confirmed he would honor the summons scheduled for Monday, July 1, 2024. “We will follow whatever measures they want and we are coming back tomorrow,” Keter said.
Describing the abduction as terrifying, Keter recounted how the road was blocked outside Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.
Four men bundled him into an unmarked vehicle with sirens as motorists and passersby watched in shock.
“We had a very bad experience this morning after Church. People came from nowhere, blocked the whole road, and started abducting me in the presence of my children. It was a very terrifying experience,” Keter shared.
Keter’s wife noted that he remained terrified after the ordeal, and their children were still in shock.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President, Faith Odhiambo, helped secure Keter’s release.
Odhiambo explained that she received a distress call and responded swiftly. Keter’s advocates initially went to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road but were denied entry.
They then checked Muthaiga, where he was not found, before finally locating him at Kamukunji Police Station.
“Today we got a distress call that Alfred Keter had been abducted. His advocate rushed to DCI headquarters but was not allowed inside. They then went to Muthaiga and finally discovered he was being held here at Kamukunji,” Odhiambo recounted.
Keter is expected to return to Kamukunji Police Station on Monday for further questioning.
