President Ruto Praises MPs Who Backed Controversial Finance Bill as 'True Heroes' of Kenya

"One day the people will realize that the MPs who voted Yes are the true heroes of Kenya," President William Ruto has stated.

The President addressed the nation on Sunday, June 30, 2024, following the deadly protests against the Finance Bill 2024.

The demonstrations, which resulted in the loss of 19 lives and substantial property damage, have left the country reeling.

Speaking from the State House, President Ruto expressed his sorrow over the fatalities but firmly denied any responsibility.

"I have no blood on my hands. Nineteen people, according to the record I have, are dead. Very unfortunate, as a democracy that should not be part of our conversation," he stated, emphasizing the need for peaceful discourse in a democratic society.

The protests caused an estimated Ksh2.4 billion in damages, with key government buildings such as the Office of the Chief Justice, City Hall, and Parliament suffering extensive damage.

"2.4 billion of property has been destroyed. Office of the CJ, City Hall, and Parliament have been burnt," Ruto detailed, highlighting the financial and structural impact of the unrest.

The Finance Bill 2024 has been a point of contention, drawing widespread criticism and igniting protests.

The bill's passage through Parliament has been met with resistance from various segments of society, leading to the escalation of the demonstrations into violent clashes between protesters and security forces.

In his address, President Ruto called for national unity and constructive dialogue.

He stressed the importance of upholding democratic values and encouraged citizens to seek peaceful solutions to their grievances.

The President's remarks fuel the ongoing debate about the Finance Bill and the government's response to the protests.
