Motorists using the Iten-Kabarnet Road have been advised to seek alternative routes after the Kenya National Highways Authority announced the temporary closure of a section near Kolol following a fresh landslide triggered by heavy rains.
In a statement issued on Saturday, May 2, the highways agency said the affected stretch was blocked after mud, trees and debris slid onto the road, cutting off traffic flow. Images shared by the authority showed large amounts of soil and vegetation covering the carriageway.
KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli confirmed that emergency teams had already been dispatched to the scene to begin clearing operations and restore movement.
“Restoration efforts are currently underway, and the Authority is working to reinstate normal traffic flow as soon as possible,” part of the statement read.
Motorists yet to begin their journeys were advised to use the Iten–Eldoret–Eldama Ravine–Kabarnet route until the road is reopened.
KeNHA further urged drivers already in the area to remain cautious and follow directions issued by police officers and traffic marshals stationed at the scene.
The latest incident marks the second landslide reported along the same road section within a week, raising concerns over the safety of the corridor during the ongoing rainy season.
The Kolol area has repeatedly experienced landslides due to its steep terrain and continued heavy rainfall, making the route highly vulnerable during storms.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of increased risks of landslides and flash floods in hilly regions across the country, urging motorists to remain vigilant and report dangerous road conditions promptly.
