The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is mourning the loss of three recruits who died during a routine training exercise at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 30, KDF said the recruits developed medical complications while taking part in a scheduled endurance exercise on January 29.
On-site medical teams responded immediately before the recruits were rushed to Eldoret Regional Hospital for specialised care.
Despite sustained efforts by doctors, the three were pronounced dead while undergoing treatment.
“The KDF is deeply saddened to announce the tragic loss of three recruits during a scheduled training activity at the DFRTS,” the statement read in part.
“Immediate medical assistance was administered by on-site medical personnel, after which the affected recruits were evacuated to Eldoret Regional Hospital for advanced medical care. Regrettably, they were pronounced dead despite concerted efforts by the attending medical teams.”

The military confirmed that the families of the deceased recruits have been notified and conveyed its deepest condolences to the bereaved families, fellow recruits and the wider KDF fraternity.
KDF also announced that it has launched a formal inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The findings, the military said, will be made public and will guide any necessary measures to improve the safety and welfare of personnel undergoing training.
“The findings will inform any necessary measures to enhance the safety and welfare of personnel undergoing training. The Kenya Defence Forces remains committed to upholding the highest standards of safety, professionalism and care for all its personnel,” the statement added.
The tragedy has once again brought into sharp focus concerns over the intensity and safety of military training, particularly in light of recent deaths linked to recruitment and training exercises.
During the latest recruitment drive, at least four candidates reportedly lost their lives, including a university student who collapsed and died while participating in a physically demanding drill.
