A violent confrontation near Nchiru Market in Meru County on Tuesday, October 7, left one Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) student critically injured and several buildings destroyed after angry students set fire to a landlord’s home.
According to witnesses, the dispute began as an argument between the student and the landlord before quickly turning violent.
The landlord allegedly stabbed the student with a sharp object, inflicting serious wounds.
The injured student was taken to Tigania Hospital, where he is receiving treatment in critical condition.
Reports indicate the disagreement may have stemmed from unpaid rent, though police have not confirmed the motive.

Shortly after the incident, word of the stabbing spread through the university, sparking protests among students. Large crowds gathered and later marched to the landlord’s residence, where they allegedly set his house and several nearby structures on fire.
By the time emergency services arrived, much of the property had already been destroyed. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze after several hours as police worked to disperse the crowds.
Businesses around Nchiru Market temporarily shut down during the unrest and many residents fled the area for safety.
Police have launched investigations into both the stabbing and the arson, urging students and residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
