Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders have warned against political wrangles over the Luo community’s leadership following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who led the party for decades.
During a meeting at Raila’s Opoda Farm home in Bondo on Friday, October 24, party delegates dismissed talk of a leadership vacuum, urging restraint among politicians eyeing the community’s political crown.
ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga said the community remains united under Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga, who has taken over as acting party leader.
She cautioned against early succession contests that could fracture the party’s cohesion.
“The leadership of Luo Nyanza has no vacuum because once Dr. Oburu has taken over the mantle of the party leadership, he is the same person who will guide the Luo community going forward,” Wanga said.
Ruaraka MP T.J. Kajwang’ warned younger politicians, seen as jostling for influence, not to exploit the transition for personal gain.

Migori County MP Fatuma Mohamed and Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu echoed similar sentiments, calling for respect, unity, and continuity of Raila’s legacy.
At the same meeting, Oburu chaired his first gathering as acting ODM leader since his appointment by the party’s Central Management Committee.
The session brought together governors, senators, MPs and delegates from Nyanza, who endorsed his leadership and pledged their support.
Oburu, who promised not to disappoint the party, faces his first major test-holding ODM together amid internal divisions over future political alliances and engagement with President William Ruto’s UDA ahead of the 2027 elections.
Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ described Oburu as a leader with the wisdom to steer ODM forward, while Siaya Governor James Orengo praised his honesty and commitment to party values.
Raila’s sister, Ruth, urged members to entrust Oburu with leadership, describing him as Raila’s confidant and the rightful figure to continue his mission.
