Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has declined to commit to timelines in the investigation into the murder of city lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, saying detectives require space to carry out a thorough probe.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Monday Report, Kanja said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had constituted a strong team to handle the case but cautioned against rushing the process.
“Investigation is a process the DCI has set up a very strong team with all the necessary capabilities to unravel the murder,” he said.
Pressed to give a timeframe, Kanja said it was too early.
“At this stage, I cannot give timelines, but the DCI boss is under instructions to move with speed and settle that issue and bring to book those who committed that heinous crime,” he added.
Mbobu, a prominent lawyer and former chair of the Political Parties’ Dispute Tribunal, was killed last Tuesday in a drive-by shooting along Magadi Road in Karen.

He was shot eight times by unidentified gunmen who escaped on a motorcycle.
Three individuals earlier held as persons of interest were released on Saturday night.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has blamed delays in arrests on the absence of CCTV cameras along Magadi Road but said investigators had secured leads from people close to the lawyer.
Meanwhile, Kanja has until Thursday to submit a report on the case to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
DPP Renson Ingonga’s office has called for expedited investigations to safeguard evidence and bring suspects to justice.
Mbobu’s killing follows a series of attacks involving gunmen on motorcycles, including the April 30 murder of Kasipul MP Charles Were, who was shot dead in Nairobi traffic at the City Mortuary roundabout.
