A police officer fatally shot two individuals and injured a third during a shooting incident at Kokwet Bar within the Juakali Center in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County, on the night of Thursday, June 26.
According to an official police report, the officer, identified as Erick Kirui of Tembelio Police Station in Moiben Sub-County, was reportedly intoxicated and armed with an AK-47 rifle at the time of the incident.
The deceased have been identified as Caroline Malakwen, with whom the officer was cohabiting, and Ignatius Kipchumba, also known as Mwala.
“He had shot dead two members of the public, namely Caroline Malakwen whom the officer was cohabiting with as a wife, and was the owner of Kokwet pub, and Ignatius Kipchumba alias Mwala,” the report stated.
During the same incident, another individual, Antony Stephen Mbifa, sustained an injury to the right side of his head from a ricocheting bullet and was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
The officer had been officially issued the firearm for night duties but reportedly deviated from his assignment.

“The police also revealed that he was issued with the firearm for night duties, but instead he took a Boda Boda, which he possibly used to get to the scene,” the report further noted.
Law enforcement officers from Juakali, supported by personnel from the Sugoi patrol base, responded promptly to the scene.
“With the reinforcement of the officers who turned up, he was arrested and disarmed while attempting to flee from Kokwet pub,” police confirmed.
The AK-47 rifle recovered from the suspect, bearing serial number KP 5521789, was loaded with 22 rounds of 7.62 x 39 mm ammunition.
The bodies of the deceased were transported to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary in Eldoret pending post-mortem examinations.
The officer is currently in police custody as investigations into the incident proceed.
