The government has launched a nationwide recruitment drive targeting 110,000 young people as part of the Climate WorX programme, an initiative aimed at addressing youth unemployment while supporting climate resilience efforts.

The announcement was made on Thursday, June 5, following President William Ruto’s directive during the Madaraka Day celebrations.

The initiative is being coordinated by the National Steering Committee of the Climate Resilience Service Program (CRSP), which is led by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo and Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga.

According to the committee, recruitment will be carried out across all 47 counties.

Applications for the programme are to be submitted online through the official portal at https://crsp.go.ke. Priority is being given to Kenyan citizens between the ages of 18 and 35.

Applicants are required to provide their National ID or Maisha Card numbers, as well as details regarding their ward, village, and sublocation of residence.

Those with prior involvement in the National Youth Service are required to indicate so during the application process.

“To reinforce local accountability, participants are deployed within their home villages. Verification is done jointly by NGAOs, chiefs, and village elders. Vetting also ensures the exclusion of previously suspended workers or known offenders,” the National Steering Committee noted.

Successful applicants will be assigned to various climate-related projects, including road works and environmental clean-up efforts.

“Youth are deployed to rehabilitate feeder roads, upgrade pedestrian pathways, and improve drainage and sanitation in informal settlements. This directly contributes to Kenya’s climate-resilient urban infrastructure development,” read the programme guideline in part.

In Nairobi County, the programme has already restored 47 kilometres of riparian zones, cleared over 84 kilometres of clogged drainage, and improved more than 45 kilometres of walkways and grounds.

Participants will be engaged in 10-day shifts. General workers will receive a daily stipend of Ksh500, while supervisors will earn Ksh580 per day.

All payments will be disbursed through mobile money platforms, specifically M-Pesa.

The government has also announced plans for an additional recruitment phase during the first quarter of 2026, scheduled between January and March.
