Kenya Meteorological Department Director David Gikungu

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall across several parts of the country from Tuesday, May 6 to Monday, May 12, 2025.

In a statement released on Monday, May 5, Deputy Director Kennedy Thiong’o called on the public to brace for notable weather disruptions, particularly in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, sections of the Rift Valley, and the Coastal region.

The advisory pointed out that residents in the eastern highlands including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi should expect cloudy mornings with light showers in some areas.

These conditions are expected to give way to sunny intervals before intensifying into moderate to heavy rainfall in the afternoons and evenings, often accompanied by thunderstorms.

In the western parts of the country and the Rift Valley, heavy rainfall is projected in the counties of Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, and Uasin Gishu.

Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale will experience moderate rainfall primarily in the morning hours, the department stated.

In addition to the rains, Thiong’o highlighted that residents in parts of the eastern highlands particularly Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi should prepare for cold nights.

Temperatures are forecasted to drop to as low as 10°C in the initial days of the period and a slight increase to around 11°C is expected later in the week.

Conversely, daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are anticipated in the coastal, northeastern, and northwestern regions of the country.
