Siaya Farmer Speaks After Battling Giant Python That Killed His Dog

Residents of Luoka Village, Sigomere Ward, Siaya County were treated to free drama on Monday, December 29, after a farmer reported an incident in which a python killed one of his dogs.

The farmer, Charles Otieno, said the incident occurred while he was carrying out his routine activities at his homestead.

He noticed unusual noise from his poultry area and sent one of his dogs to check. Moments later, the dog began barking loudly before running back toward him.

According to Otieno, a large python followed the dog closely and appeared aggressive.

“I saw the snake following the dog and opening its mouth as it came towards me,” he said.

Fearing for his safety, Otieno armed himself with a machete and confronted the reptile. During the encounter, the python was killed, but one of his dogs also died.

Otieno said the snake had been a persistent problem in the area, claiming it had previously attacked poultry and small livestock within the village.

He also linked the incident to wider challenges faced by farmers, noting that wild animals frequently invade farms. He said monkeys often destroy crops, and dogs are commonly used to chase them away.

After the incident, Otieno transported both the dead python and his dog to Sigomere Police Station after officers at Madungu Police Post reportedly declined to record his statement.

He said that at Sigomere, police initially hesitated to receive him but later accepted the report after intervention from members of the public.

According to Otieno, police informed him that officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) would handle the matter. He was later told that the snake and the dog had been taken to KWS offices in Siaya.

He said he has not followed up on the matter due to financial constraints, noting that travelling to Siaya would cost him about Sh500.

Otieno added that some residents cautioned him against visiting the offices, warning that he could face consequences for killing a protected animal.
