The government has announced a full waiver of medical bills for individuals injured during the anti-government protests held on June 17 and 25 in Nairobi.
In a statement released on Monday, June 30, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the Ministry of Health has directed Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to absorb all treatment costs related to injuries sustained during the demonstrations.
The expenses will be charged to the hospital’s Disaster Emergency Fund.
“The recent demonstrations in Nairobi on June 17 and 25, 2025, resulted in injuries and emotional distress for many Kenyans,” said Duale. “As a Ministry, our hearts go out to all those affected, and we remain committed to ensuring they receive the care and support they need.”

Among the cases highlighted was that of Boniface Kariuki, a 22-year-old street vendor who was shot in the head at close range during the protests.
Duale confirmed that Kariuki’s medical bill, which had exceeded Ksh3 million by the time of his death on Monday afternoon, would be fully settled.
“This includes the outstanding bill of the late Mr. Boniface Kariuki, which stood at Ksh815,805 at the time of his passing,” Duale said.
Kariuki had been undergoing treatment at KNH and was declared brain dead on Sunday, June 29, before being confirmed dead the following day.
The waiver applies to all patients who sustained injuries during the two protest days and received treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
